Sometimes the VMware VSS integration and Netapp Snapdrive gives you a hard time.
If you are only interested in snapshotting the vmdk and not the LUNs, you could go for this workaround:
(actually it doesn’t trigger a Netapp Snapshot but tries to gets everything consistent, also the LUN)
AS VMware pre-freeze script (Unregister ONTAP provider)
navssprv.exe -r service /u
As VMware post-thaw script (Register it back)
navssprv.exe -r service -a user -p password
Last I encountered some errors while doing a storage VMotion for a couple of VMs during a migration from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4.1.
When looking in the logs for the CBTMotion errors I found following messages.
CBTMotion: scsi0:1: Clone: failed to start block tracking session on source disk: Change tracking is not active for this disk.
CBTMotion: scsi0:1: failed to clone disk from /vmfs/volumes/694286b5-b7bf1d73/VM01/VM01_1.vmdk to /vmfs/volumes/2b0e242d-40129/VM01/VM01_1.vmdk.
CBTMotion: disk clone failed, aborting Storage VMotion.
Msg_Post: Error
[msg.cbtmotion.disk.clone.failed] Disk clone failed. Canceling Storage vMotion.
To solve this I created a snapshot on the VM and committed it. After this the storage VMotion worked successfully.
Recently, Microsoft released some new certificates with the main aim: Virtualization. There are four new exams, which are listed below:
- 70-659: TS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Server Virtualization
- 70-652: TS: Windows Server Virtualization, Configuring
- 70-669: TS: Windows Server 2008 R2, Desktop Virtualization
- 70-693: Pro: Windows Server 2008 R2, Virtualization Administrator
If you pass three of the exams you’ll receive the title: MCITP: Windows Server 2008 R2, Virtualization Administrator.
Two of these exams are mandatory (70-669 & 70-693) and one you can choose yourself (or 70-659 or 70-652).

Notepad++ supports Powershell from version v5.6 but the VMware PowerCLI cmdlets aren’t included.
So I created PowerCLI Language definition file for syntax highlighting. It contains the cmdlets available in vSphere PowerCLI 4 Update 1 and vCenter Update Manager PowerCLI 4 Update 1.

To add PowerCLI as a user-defined language %APPDATA%\Notepad++\userDefineLang.xml and add the above configuration to this file.
Secondly I created a PowerCLI auto-completion file which contains the same PowerCLI cmdlets. This configuration needs to be added to C:\Program Files\Notepad++\plugins\APIs\PowerCLI.xml. The name of the auto-completion file needs to be the same as defined in the user-defined language definition file.

I had to configure additional portgroups based on vlanids on a vSphere cluster. I couldn’t use host profiles to apply the configuration on all hosts.
$vCenter = Connect-VIServer -server(Read-Host "Please enter the name of your vCenter Server.")
$Cluster = Get-Cluster -Name (Read-Host "Please enter the name of the cluster whose servers need to be reconfigured.")
$vSwitch = Read-Host "Please enter the name of the vSwitch on which the portgroups need to be created."
$PGfile = import-csv -Path (Read-Host "Please enter the path to the csv file with the new portgroups to be added to the vSwitch")
$Cluster | Get-VMhost | `
Foreach{
$vSwitch = Get-VirtualSwitch -Name $vSwitch -Vmhost $_
$PGfile | `
Foreach {
$vpg = New-VirtualPortGroup -VirtualSwitch $vSwitch -Name $_.PortGroupName
Set-VirtualPortGroup -VirtualPortGroup $vpg -VLanId $_.Vlanid
}
}
Disconnect-VIserver -Server $vCenter -Confirm:$False
The script asks for
- vCenter IP or FQDN
- Cluster Name
- vSwitch name
- Path to the csv file
The csv file contains the portgroup names and vlanid’s.

On a Virtual Center 4 update 1 installation I noticed an Perf Charts service error on the performance overview tab. The advanced performance tab is functioning as normal.
There are 3 VMware KBs related to this type of error:
Unfortunately none of these solved my problem.
In virtual center U1 the configuration of the performance charts database has changed location. It’s now located in C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\tomcat\conf\Catalina\localhost\statsreport.xml.
VMware updated the KB article (KB1013877) in the mean time to reflect the changes in Update 1.
Since several weeks, one of my customers had some issues with a virtualcenter that kept crashing at random moments.
The virtualcenter itself is running 2.5U4 (ok not the latest version) and is currently managing about 20 hosts and some 150 virtual machines. The size of the database was set to 5gb and the log file was initially around 3gb. so nothing special here.
In the event viewer of the virtualcenter server, we saw that the transaction log for the database, was full and therefore the virtualcenter received an unrecoverable error and stopped. Since we did changed the statistics level of the performance counter to level 4 (we really needed those performance counters), we were forced to change them back to the default settings.
To free up some table space, we disabled the rollup job and stopped the virtualcenter and started purging some old data (see vmware kb 1000125) – Restarted the virtualcenter service but unfortunately after 10 minutes the log file of 12Gb was again full.
Since we do not own the sql server, we had a long discussion with the database team if it was possible to increase the log file size. So in the end, we changed the log file to 50gb – restarted the rollup job and saw that the job was successfully completed after 1hour. The job used around 20gb to complete.
so bottom line
– do not size your log files to small, be sure to have a lot of free working space available so that the sql rollup jobs can complete without errors. If not you will have a snowball.
– if you increase the statistics level, increase of reserve additional disc space for the log files.
– remember that your database size and log file size will growth depending the evolution of the number of virtual machines and hosts that your virtualcenter must manage.
– and monitor the success rate of the rollup jobs
